Ciena's Optical Network Management - SaaS Platform.
Product: B2B SaaS application for telecommunication providers.
Goal: Enable efficient creation, management, and live monitoring of telecom/submarine optical networks, optimizing for capacity and cost.
User research: Zoom for user interviews
User flow: Miro and Lucidchart
Design work: Figma, Sketch, some AI support
My Role & Responsibilities
-
UX Designer responsible for user research (with network engineers/planners), information architecture, workflow definition, wireframing, prototyping, usability testing, and visual design input.
-
Key contributor to taking the product from initial concept through development and iteration.
-
Creating and managing SaaS design system
The Process / Approach
-
Research: Conducted interviews and workflow analysis with network engineers.
-
Define: Mapped complex user journeys for network planning, provisioning, and monitoring; defined information architecture.
-
Design: Created wireframes and interactive prototypes focusing on network topology visualization, dashboard design, and data visualization for equipment comparison. Iterated based on feedback.
-
Testing: Performed usability testing on prototypes with target users.

Questions
What actions do you perform to do the prerequisites to start planning the networks, and how do you do that ?
There have always been discussion about separate flows (automated and manual) which drastically reduce the learning curve for the engineers, how do you manage without it ? How does the new network technicians learn the product ?
How do you view and/or reuse the previously created network ?
What are the basic information which you need to plan the network (sites and fibers) and what actions do you perform the task?
How do you know that you have missed configuring any particular site or fiber ?
Equipment configuration for sites and fibers can be quite difficult as there are can be over 1000 sites, how do you configure them and still meet the client needs ?
How do you use the path components ?
How is the $ value defined without any problem ?
How do you define or choose scenarios from the planned network ?
How do you bill the customer ?
